About Lake Tahoe
Mark Twain described Lake Tahoe as "the fairest picture the whole earth affords". He wrote further that "three months of camp life at Lake Tahoe would restore an Egyptian mummy to his pristine vigor and give him an appetite like an alligator. The air is very pure and fine, bracing and delicious, the same as angels breathe".
Tahoe is 1645 feet deep, making it one of the deepest lakes in the world. The surface of the lake sits at 6223 feet above sea level.
Tahoe's 72 miles of shoreline are blessed with scenic beaches surrounded by high mountain peaks.
The lake's legendary clarity is maintained because of geological factors that prevent nutrients such as nitrogen from flowing into its water.
